Move toward an action you can explain
Running away indefinitely may also move you away from healing or make your partner's pressure unusable. We would pick a destination that buys a cast, a trap opportunity or a recovery interval. Use slows to create that space before the opponent has already reached you. Cone of Cold and Shadowflame require the correct facing for their cones. Blink and Disengage move differently, so inspect the direction and destination. A movement button spent for a small convenience may be the same answer you need when the next enemy setup arrives.
Separate moving casts from proc-based access
Hunter's Steady Shot and Rapid Fire explicitly allow movement. Mage's Fireball and Frostbolt now belong to their respective specs; Fire has Scorch, while its Pyroblast is a selected replacement for Fireball. Hot Streak and Spell Burn can prepare instant Fireball or that replacement. Selected talents can further change movement or interruption properties, but having one proc does not make the entire spell list mobile. Ordinary casts can be delayed by direct-hit pushback, and channels can be shortened. We recommend learning which action survives movement before planning a retreat around finishing it.
Preserve the condition behind the damage
Elemental's Lava Burst checks for your own Flame Shock. Destruction's Conflagrate checks for your own Immolate, while Chaos Bolt's shard payoff is affected by Chaos Scar on the target. Marksmanship needs an opportunity to complete Aimed Shot unless a selected effect changes that cast. These are different setup problems, so a single copied opener will not solve all of them. We would establish the condition and identify the opponent's likely response before spending the payoff. Check the ability explorer when a familiar name hides a changed prerequisite.
Decide where continuing damage belongs
Affliction, Shadow and Balance can maintain periodic pressure while repositioning, but that pressure affects later control choices. Hex, Polymorph and Freezing Trap need targets kept free of damage. Cyclone prevents both damage and healing, making it a deliberate pause rather than another damage multiplier. Fire's current Blazing Barrier has an explicit exception that avoids fragile-control targets; that does not exempt every Fire effect. Tell the partner which opponent remains clean for control and which receives pressure. Reassess the assignment before spreading another effect simply because a target is within range.
Treat a pet as another positioned unit
Beast Mastery's Kill Command requires the owner's sight even when the pet has already reached an opponent. Pet Attack and Pet Follow therefore deserve attention alongside the Hunter's route. Demonology's demon choice changes its action: Felguard, Felhunter and Succubus supply different control packages. A Succubus control is breakable, so its target assignment must agree with your continuing damage. Destruction and Affliction do not inherit that permanent demon package. We would inspect the selected companion, its survival and the control target before assuming a ranged spec continues its complete plan from anywhere on the map.
Turn distance into recovery or another exchange
Since 0.25, Typhoon and Thunderstorm can end ordinary casts through knockback, while moving casts can continue. Displacement creates time, but it adds no school lockout and may move a target out of your partner's pressure. Announce the purpose before using it. Turtle, Ice Block and Dispersion also buy survival at an action cost rather than allowing the normal attack sequence to continue. Decide what you want available afterward. The partner planner can help frame whether your pair needs that distance for healing, casting or a coordinated second attack.
Arcane adds a different ranged commitment: Blast builds charges and increasing Mana cost, Barrage spends the charges, and earned Missile Barrage changes the next channel. Moving during that channel requires Slipstream. Do not give every Mage an assumed moving-cast escape. Knockback and leap arcs also make the landing part of your route, so check whether the partner can still support the position after the airborne movement.

QUICK ANSWERS
Clear up the next decision.
Is more distance always safer for a ranged spec?+
Distance helps only while the team can still contribute. Losing friendly support, an important sightline or pet-command access can remove the advantage. Move toward a usable next action rather than judge the position by distance alone.
Does a knockback work exactly like Counterspell?+
No. Current knockback disrupts ordinary casts through movement and can fail to end a moving cast. Counterspell has an explicit interruption and school-lockout effect. Plan the follow-up according to which kind of stop you used.

Where the advice comes from.
Toolkit records were inspected from the original public client, version 0.28.1, on 3 Nov 2026. Suggested positioning, practice priorities and tier placements are Cobalt’s editorial assessment. They are not measured win rates or a tournament ranking. Server-side tuning and selected talents can change an exchange.
