01 / THE FIRST EXPERIMENT
A starting build with one job.
Start with the school whose ordinary cast and control tools you understand. Frost is our suggested learning experiment, while Fire and Arcane remain useful alternatives for a more committed cast plan.
A starting experiment, not a guaranteed best-in-slot setup or a prescribed point allocation. Inspect the current normal builder and your realm’s tooltip before committing.
02 / CHOOSE THE ROLE FIRST
Three talent directions.
Frost
Our suggested learning experiment if you want to make positioning the first question. Do not turn every opening into an uninterrupted damage test.
Open official builder ↗Fire
A direct-cast or periodic-fire investigation whose exact payoff depends on the chosen effects. Keep the trigger requirement separate from the fantasy of a large crit.
Open official builder ↗Arcane
A cast-sequence and resource-management route. Make sure the planned casting window can be maintained before attaching more effects to it.

Read the trigger.
Then choose the effect.
These are real Mage records from the default public Echo Builder, checked on 3 November. Availability and usefulness are different questions; this is a shortlist to investigate, not a promised draw.
Stonefist BarrageArcane Blast, Fireball, Frostbolt or Frostfire Bolt
Choose your actual repeatable cast. A list covering several schools does not require mixing all of them.

Arcane BombardmentCritical strikes have a chance
The Mage version adds both a critical-hit condition and a chance. It is not guaranteed after each ordinary cast.

Read the named list before expecting faster basic casts or every escape ability from this effect.
Default catalog record 201292 · genuine icon / original explanation04 / FIX THE BOTTLENECK
A stat decision order.
Use this qualitative order to decide what to inspect next. It is not a set of simulated weights, universal caps or an instruction to ignore your active tree.
- 01Safe casting windows and a usable control / escape plan
- 02Enough survival to preserve those windows
- 03Spell power and the main resource needs of the chosen school
- 04Critical strike for an effect that explicitly requires criticals
- 05Haste after cast uptime and resource use are sustainable
An eligible cooldown becoming ready sooner is useful only when it helps your actual control or damage sequence. Do not buy haste for an ability that is absent from the plan.
05 / THE LOOP
Make the next press useful.
Stonefist lists named basic casts. Mage Arcane Bombardment instead checks critical strikes. One supports repeatable cast use; the other adds a condition to the payoff.
Perform the actual eligible action.
Check whether the intended result had a useful opportunity.
Change the failing step before adding another layer.
The mistake to catch early.
Comparing theoretical critical-hit effects while real enemies repeatedly force you to stop casting. Fix the casting window before judging the finished build.
When an interaction seems absent, read the precise trigger and class record first. An effect with the same name on another class can use a different condition. PTR examples can also differ from the default catalog.
One useful experiment.
Choose a short stretch with room to move. Cast the same main spell, leave the danger, then cast again. Ask whether the next improvement should increase the useful cast window or the value of each completed cast.
Keep the encounter, role and ordinary sequence as consistent as practical. Write down what changed and what remained awkward. Your own observation is more useful than pretending this guide measured a universal winner.
