Which Mage build should I try?
Pyroblast Fire
The compelling connection is Fire critical strikes feeding both Ignite and Hot Streak. Pyroclasm then gives the opening spell and kill chain a clear identity. Establish that engine before treating every attractive secondary upgrade as equally useful.

The strongest documented connection is between control effects and Shatter's conditional damage bonus. Frostbite and the capstone's periodic Nova can contribute control, while Splitting Ice helps the central projectile affect packs. Build around those jobs instead of expecting the Fire guide's Ignite or free-Pyroblast engine to appear automatically.
