Backstab Subtlety
Azeroth Survivors Rogue

Move from Combat’s Sinister Strike engine to Subtlety’s Backstab opening. Shadow Dance supplies nearby-target splash, while Preparation and Dirty Deeds create a separate control-and-pressure package.

THE COBALT TAKE

Our take: Subtlety offers a readable alternative when you want control to shape damage decisions. Backstab splash rewards useful target proximity, but the Rogue’s safety still depends on leaving crowded space before a limited rescue effect is spent.

Desktop 0.111.0 + 0.130.0 checked. Reviewed 30 October 2026. Original builds were cross-checked between 0.111.0 and 0.130.0; the new alternate builds were checked directly against 0.130.0 native talent records. All 102 class abilities were checked. The build in four decisions.

Know Backstab

Learn it in the run, or check whether an unlocked talent starts you with it.

Weigh early Luck

Better level-up rarity odds, when the current clear can afford the choice.

Inspect the amulet

Look for the legendary remake of this spell in a jewelry offer.

Reinforce the result

Read its effect. A repeated offer of the worn amulet can empower it.

BEFORE YOU START THE RUN

Give the plan a starting point.

Confirm which strike starts the run

Shadow Dance replaces the normal Sinister Strike opening with Backstab and adds splash to Backstab and Eviscerate. Check whether that capstone is learned before planning around the replacement. Earlier characters can still work toward a Backstab direction when the ability is offered, but should evaluate the run they have now. Opportunity is the direct Backstab damage support in the native Subtlety branch, rather than Combat’s Improved Sinister Strike.

Build control and damage as separate conditions

Preparation supplies a free Gouge around you every six seconds. Dirty Deeds increases damage against enemies with specified control states. Those effects fit together as an editorial direction, but the descriptions do not promise that every enemy will be controlled continuously. Keep an ordinary damage plan for the moments or targets where the condition is absent. Permanent armory choices and in-run spell offers remain different systems.

FOCUS THE CHOICES YOU ACTUALLY SEE

Backstab Subtlety upgrade priorities

Read these in the context of your current clear. They are conditional priorities rather than a numeric stat weight or a fixed card sequence.

YOUR NEXT CHOICE

What should I take now?

An editorial helper for Backstab Subtlety. Compare the actual cards in your client.

Learn your build’s core spell

Take the core ability when it is offered, or use a verified starting-spell talent you already have. The client describes knowing the spell as a condition for its legendary amulet offer.

Changes stay on this page. No game save, account or upload.

Strengthen the Backstab you are using

Opportunity directly improves Backstab. Once the strike is known, compare its offered development with the actual problem: insufficient pressure on a durable target, poor pack handling, or a dangerous opening. A rare unrelated spell can be attractive, but rarity alone does not complete this core or replace the support you are missing.

Make splash count without trapping yourself

Shadow Dance adds damage around the original target within a five-yard area. Nearby enemies can therefore make each supported strike more useful. This is a reason to notice target spacing, not to surround the Rogue deliberately or assume damage reaches enemies outside that stated area.

Use control windows to earn safer pressure

Preparation’s free Gouge is timed; Dirty Deeds rewards damage against stunned, rooted, slowed or fleeing enemies. When control is visibly working, use the breathing room for useful damage or movement. Do not extend a conditional bonus to every strike, and do not invent a guaranteed boss-control interaction.

Protect the opening before buying future rarity

Luck improves the odds of rarer level-up upgrades. A Rogue already struggling to keep an exit open should weigh immediate damage and safety against that future benefit. The Subtlety branch has a Luck talent, but that does not establish a legendary-amulet guarantee or make an unfinished damage package safe.

BUILD CONNECTIONS

Talents that support the idea.

Inspect the synergies, then compare them with the Armory’s Talents tab between runs. The recorded client describes milestones at 10, 20 and 30 points. Exact ranks and tunable values must be read in your client.

WHY IT MATTERS

Shadow Dance

Replaces the opening strike with Backstab and gives Backstab and Eviscerate nearby-target splash. The damage fraction remains a native parameter.

Hover or focus a talent on desktop; tap on mobile. This is a synergy reference. Node order is a reading order, not a point allocation or an unlock tree.

FROM FIRST PICKS TO A FINISHED ENGINE

Your run plan.

Before the run

Plan around the learned Subtlety tools

Identify whether the account currently supplies Shadow Dance, Preparation and Cheat Death. Read the actual armory requirements rather than treating every appealing milestone as simultaneously affordable. A free respec lets you choose a direction between runs; it does not convert a future capstone into a current starting spell.

Opening

Establish Backstab before collecting side projects

If the core is not supplied at the start, recognize its first useful offer as a change in the plan’s readiness. Once it is active, develop a dependable strike and preserve movement room. This guide does not import WoW combo points, a required weapon arrangement or a positional attack rule from another client.

Developing

Let control reopen the route

Notice the free Gouge cadence and the enemies it actually affects. A window of control can give you a path out of a cluster as well as a damage opportunity. Eviscerate also receives the capstone splash if learned, but the text does not say Shadow Dance automatically grants that second ability at the opening.

Emergency

Spend a rescue on getting out

Cheat Death prevents a lethal blow under its stated restriction, leaves the Rogue at a quarter of maximum health and grants three seconds of protection. Use that interval to restore a safer position. Its two-and-a-half-minute limit makes it a reserve, not recurring healing that justifies staying in the same pressure.

Equipment decision

Match the remake to a known strike

A Backstab-remaking amulet is a candidate only after checking its actual offered effect and the spell-known condition. Compare its benefit with the worn amulet before accepting the replacement. A legendary name alone cannot establish whether this Subtlety plan benefits more than an existing utility choice.

Keep the build focused.

  • Assuming Shadow Dance also grants Eviscerate at the start.

  • Treating conditional control damage as an always-active bonus.

  • Using Cheat Death as permission to remain surrounded.

  • Bringing a WoW combo-point rotation or unverified Backstab positional rule into Survivors.

QUICK ANSWERS

Rogue build questions

Is Preparation a cooldown reset here? +

The verified original-client record describes an automatic nearby Gouge every six seconds. This guide follows that effect.

Does splash replace the need for single-target damage? +

No. It extends useful damage to nearby enemies, while a lone durable target still asks how strong the original strike is.

Should every offer go into control? +

No. Control supports this route, but the run still needs a working damage core and enough safety when a particular enemy is not controlled.
