THE COBALT TAKE · EDITORIAL ASSESSMENT
Our take: Destruction is about making a short opportunity count. Spend as much attention on creating and leaving that opportunity as you spend on the damage that happens inside it.
PRE-LAUNCH GUIDE Source reviewed 30 October 2026. Forever launches 4 November. Talent data is versioned; balance and gearing advice remain provisional.
Check the current Immolate interaction in the selected allocation.
Plan both the finishing opportunity and its resource requirements.

Choose a burst opportunity with a purpose
Decide whether your pressure is meant to finish a vulnerable target, force an enemy defensive, or help secure an objective. Those outcomes do not always require the same degree of commitment. A hard cast at a target who can safely ignore it may be less useful than a shorter action that supports your team’s immediate task.
This is our tactical interpretation of the documented Forever toolkit, not a claimed competitive test result. We recommend learning one controlled setup and one controlled exit before adding more complexity to the sequence.
Build an executable window
Review the Destruction route for the casts and instant follow-ups you intend to use. Confirm their prerequisites and your available points. Then compare the utility and survival options that make those actions possible against players rather than an uncontested target.
Inspect the current Immolate and Conflagrate interaction and the resource requirement of Shadowburn. A rule remembered from another WoW version or another level can create a failed finish at exactly the wrong moment. Keep your selected allocation and the reason for its flexible points together so the plan can be updated coherently when tuning changes.
Make the opponent work to deny your cast
Start with useful cover and friendly support available. Identify the player who can quickly reach or interrupt you, and decide what will create a casting interval despite that threat. Your demon’s assignment should contribute to the same opportunity rather than starting a separate chase.
Coordinate control with teammates before committing. Applying damage to a target they intended to isolate can remove the setup you needed. In group play, ask which enemy must be pressured and which should remain available for control. The answer should guide both your character and the demon.
Check the condition, then spend the finisher
Establish the target setup your current allocation requires, cast during the window you actually have, and use an instant follow-up when its condition and cost are satisfied. Watch the opponent’s response continuously. If they move behind cover or use a strong defensive, stop evaluating the next spell as if the opening were unchanged.
Preserve a useful action for movement or the final step of a realistic attempt. Spending every instant early can leave you unable to finish once the target begins to disengage. Equally, saving everything for a perfect future opportunity can mean never applying enough pressure to force a response.
Leave while the route still exists
Choose your exit before beginning an aggressive cast. Move toward teammates or a defensible position rather than following a low-health target around a blind corner. If the enemy turns toward you, reassess the demon’s route and your recovery options as part of the same decision.
Use Life Tap only when the health exchange is compatible with the pressure you face. For gear, consider health and resources alongside offensive caster stats. We do not claim exact PvP caps, mandatory racial choices or a settled matchup ranking before launch evidence can support those decisions. Spend gold on a recurring limitation you can identify.
Practice a denied opening
Ask a partner to stop your first attempt with movement, interruption or a defensive action. The exercise is to identify the closed window and preserve another useful attempt, not to force every remaining resource into the original one. Include the demon’s position in the review.
Common mistakes are casting from an exposed position, using a finisher without its required setup, and abandoning the objective to chase a damage highlight. After a loss, name the earliest action that made your exit difficult. Correcting that point is often more useful than adding another theoretical burst step to a sequence you could not finish.
QUICK ANSWERS
Destruction Warlock questions
Should I hard cast whenever the target is in range? +
Only when the position and opposing threats give the cast a useful chance to finish. Range alone is not a casting window.
Can I use the PvE Conflagrate rule unchanged? +
Check the current talent interaction, the target state and your resource budget. Player responses can close the window before the next action.
Does this include tested arena matchups? +
No. These are general pre-launch tactical recommendations, clearly separated from verified competitive performance data.
