THE COBALT TAKE · EDITORIAL ASSESSMENT

Our take: Destruction is appealing if you want the next damage decision to feel immediate. Its success still depends on preparation: the target, the demon and the casting window need to agree with the plan.

PRE-LAUNCH GUIDE Source reviewed 30 October 2026. Forever launches 4 November. Talent data is versioned; balance and gearing advice remain provisional.

Conflagrate

Check the current Immolate interaction in the selected allocation.

Shadowburn

Plan both the finishing opportunity and its resource requirements.

Bane of Havoc

Use a deliberate secondary-target assignment for cleave.

Direct pressure with conditions attached

The reviewed Forever sources put direct damage and instant follow-ups at the center of Destruction. They also describe Bane of Havoc as a cleave tool. Do not read that as permission to ignore target setup, resources or the demon.

Our recommendation is to make the condition for each important action visible. What must be on the target? What does the action consume in your current allocation? How long will the enemy remain useful to attack? Answering those questions makes a short damage sequence reliable without pretending that every character has the full projected level-60 toolkit.

Read the interaction before copying the button order

Compare the cast-time, efficiency, critical-damage and instant-action choices in the actual Destruction tree. Follow prerequisites at your current level before planning around a capstone. An allocation built for a later spellbook should not be pasted onto a character missing its defining actions.

Pay particular attention to the selected Immolate, Conflagrate and Shadowburn interactions. The reviewed pages distinguish lower-level behavior from later talent-supported changes. Check what your current tooltip actually says about consumption and resource costs. Our preference is to understand that condition before adopting a maintenance or finishing rule.

A practical order for a worthwhile target

Begin with the intended demon ready, a safe casting position and any assigned group utility agreed. Let the tank secure the enemy. Establish the effects required by your selected Destruction interaction, then use the appropriate direct spell in a window that can finish. Choose an instant follow-up when its conditions and resource cost make sense.

When the target is nearly defeated, compare a short finish with the value of another hard cast or fresh damage-over-time investment. Do not add work simply to make the sequence look complete. The next target may be the better place to spend the resources.

Give Havoc a separate target decision

If your allocation uses Bane of Havoc, select the secondary enemy deliberately and keep the main damage assignment clear. The right choice is a target that remains relevant to the encounter, not merely the first nameplate within reach. Re-evaluate the assignment when the group changes priorities.

Avoid touching an enemy reserved for control or starting area pressure before the tank has gathered the pull. Check the demon’s location during every major target switch. Cleave is useful when it helps complete the encounter; damage that breaks the agreed control plan can cost more than it contributes.

Plan movement and recovery into the sequence

Keep useful instant actions available for the moments that demand movement, but do not assume every instant is free or conditionless. Watch your health, Mana and Soul Shards before reaching the emergency. A quiet interval for Life Tap is a resource decision you can prepare rather than a rescue you force on the healer.

For gear, compare actual caster stats and the limits visible in your activity. A large critical hit does not prove a complete gearing priority. We are not publishing final stat weights, mandatory racial choices or a definitive level-60 item list from pre-launch evidence.

Review the cast that failed to land

Track why important casts or finishers failed to contribute: the target died, moved away, lacked the required setup, or forced you to relocate. Separate those situations from a simple shortage of damage. A new item will not repair a repeated target-selection mistake.

Common errors are using a copied Conflagrate rule without checking the current talent interaction, applying a cleave effect to the wrong target, and forgetting that the demon has not followed the group’s switch. Practice a clean opening and a clean transition together. The strongest next action is often the one that keeps the whole sequence functional.

QUICK ANSWERS

Destruction Warlock questions

Does Conflagrate always behave the same at every level? +

Check the current allocation and tooltip. The reviewed sources distinguish lower-level behavior from later talent-supported interactions.

Should Havoc go on any second enemy? +
