THE COBALT TAKE · EDITORIAL ASSESSMENT
Our take: Affliction is most rewarding when the player can predict which enemies deserve sustained pressure. The key skill is selecting enough investment to finish the pull, then keeping the next pull affordable.
PRE-LAUNCH GUIDE Source reviewed 30 October 2026. Forever launches 4 November. Talent data is versioned; balance and gearing advice remain provisional.

Build a useful damage-over-time investment rather than a nameplate collection.
Recognize the available instant opportunity without abandoning the target plan.
Compare its place in a complete allocation instead of assuming every capstone is mandatory.

Give each damage effect time to do its job
The reviewed Forever guides describe Affliction around Corruption, Banes, drains and talent-driven opportunities such as Nightfall. Their advice distinguishes short-lived quest enemies from longer group encounters. That is a stronger starting point than copying an entire spell list onto every target.
Our recommendation is to choose the useful lifetime of each investment. A durable enemy can justify several effects; a nearly defeated add may need only a brief finish. The resources you preserve are part of your output because they let you continue playing when the next meaningful target arrives.
Choose the engine, then question the expensive detour
Inspect the damage-over-time and drain choices in the current Affliction tree, with their actual prerequisites and available ranks. Decide whether the allocation is intended for solo sustain, longer single-target fights, or several worthwhile targets. Those activities should not automatically receive the same spare points.
Keep an open question beside a large capstone investment such as a Wrack route: what useful action does it replace, and under what conditions is that replacement better? A higher position in the tree is not proof that the spell belongs in every sequence. Compare the intended interaction before spending gold on a reset.
A concrete opening with an exit condition
Prepare your demon, resources and assigned group utility before the pull. Let the tank secure a dungeon target. Apply Corruption and an appropriate Bane when the enemy will live long enough to justify them, then add the other effects your chosen allocation is designed to support. Use a drain or direct spell in the safe time that remains, responding to an available Nightfall opportunity when it is useful.
The exit condition matters: stop adding maintenance work to a dying target. Do not refresh an effect merely because its timer is visible. Switch attention to the next priority, recovery or a needed utility action.
Make multi-target pressure selective
Choose a primary enemy and a small number of secondary targets that justify sustained attention. Keep crowd-control assignments out of that selection. Applying pressure indiscriminately can break your group’s plan or consume the resources needed to finish its dangerous target.
Track whether the demon is attacking the intended enemy and whether a channel can finish safely from your position. If an enemy is moving toward you or a mechanic is about to force movement, use the interval to reposition rather than beginning another fragile commitment. A good target plan should make the encounter simpler, not create a second encounter for the healer.
Life Tap is a planned exchange
Choose a safe moment to exchange health for Mana, then account for the health you will need to recover. Do not transfer the cost to a busy healer without warning. A comfortable resource cycle includes preparation, useful damage, a deliberate recovery decision and enough reserve to respond when a pull changes.
For gear, compare actual caster stats alongside the problem limiting your sessions: resource recovery, survivability or damage completed on worthwhile targets. We are not publishing a universal stat weight, mandatory racial choice or final level-60 best-in-slot list from pre-launch evidence. Avoid treating another expansion’s scaling assumptions as verified Forever behavior.
Review wasted maintenance, not only missing damage
After a few comparable pulls, note which effects were refreshed too early, which targets died before the investment paid back, and which channels were stopped by predictable movement. Those mistakes point to specific decisions you can change without rewriting the entire allocation.
Also review the group’s utility: did the assigned curse remain a conscious job, was control preserved, and was the demon ready for the next pull? Common mistakes are chasing perfect timers on irrelevant enemies, draining from an unsafe position, and using Life Tap only after every safe recovery opportunity has already passed. Improve the sequence that connects one pull to the next.
