THE COBALT TAKE · EDITORIAL ASSESSMENT
Our starting recommendation is a clean seal-and-strike cycle with reliable support. Add seal-twisting complexity after you can execute the simpler plan while handling encounter mechanics.

Adds a direct active attack to the Paladin damage cycle.

Ret has an active cycle to learn
Retribution in Forever is not well described by an old image of a Paladin waiting between auto-attacks. Holy Strike and the revised seal interactions create more active decisions, while the class still rewards noticing when an ally needs support. Choose Ret because you enjoy that blend rather than because a pre-launch ranking promises a guaranteed raid slot.
This is launch planning based on current published sources. Specialist beta examples can explain a useful early cycle, but they do not prove a complete level-60 raid optimum. We are deliberately separating a practical first plan from a final build code, exact stat weights or a Best-in-Slot list that needs stronger evidence.
Understand the interaction before adding inputs
Read the relationship between your chosen seal, Judgement and Holy Strike. Sacred Arbiter adds an interaction with Judgement effects, while mana-related choices affect how comfortably you can sustain the cycle. Champion of the Light is a reason to evaluate hybrid item stats carefully rather than dismissing every item with Intellect on sight.
Twist of Light adds a specific seal-replacement interaction to a following melee attack. Learn what the current tooltip says and practice one deliberate replacement at a time. Our recommendation is to avoid turning a complicated macro into a substitute for understanding it. A simpler sequence executed while moving safely is more useful than an intricate one that causes missed mechanics or leaves the wrong seal active.
A practical damage decision sequence
Before contact, set the buffs and seal you intend to use and identify the tank’s target. Check that you have not left a tanking threat setting such as Righteous Fury active unintentionally. Start attacking from a safe position without taking control away from the tank. Keep Holy Strike and an appropriate Judgement decision central once trained. Do not fill every gap with a costly spell simply because the global is available.
Choose a seal in the context of your weapon and item package rather than copying a single answer for every character. When a target will live long enough, a setup effect may repay the global it costs. On a nearly dead enemy, getting a useful attack in or preparing the next target may matter more.
For extra enemies, evaluate their remaining health, your mana and whether they may all be damaged. Consecration is not free damage; repeatedly paying for it on a pack that is about to die can weaken the next pull. If you are using Twist of Light, preserve your awareness of mechanics and support obligations while practicing the additional seal decision.
Keep enough resource for the next useful action
Paladin damage and emergency support share a mana bar. If every optional damage button is pressed without considering the encounter’s length, you may lose the option to help an ally or continue your main attack cycle later. Review the next phase and the chance to recover between pulls before spending aggressively.
Watch which casts actually contributed on short targets. A spell that barely begins to deal damage before an enemy dies may be a poor use of your resources even if it belongs in a longer encounter plan. Our preference is sustainable, repeatable pressure rather than a very strong opening followed by a long period with few useful choices.
Evaluate a weapon and a hybrid damage package
Start by comparing the weapon itself, then the offensive and resource stats that support your chosen cycle. Ret can care about both physical and Holy damage, so avoid importing a complete stat order from a different version of WoW. A new item should be judged against what it changes in your actual loadout.
We do not provide a fixed hit target, final race winner or launch Best-in-Slot set here. Preserve enough health to perform mechanics and compare similar encounters when testing a gear change. If a hybrid item looks interesting because of a talent interaction, examine the total package rather than treating one attractive stat as proof that it wins.
Ret remains a Paladin
Keep Cleanse and useful blessings on accessible binds, and coordinate buff responsibilities with other Paladins. Helping a teammate act again can be a better group damage gain than another personal attack. After a run, review unnecessary seal changes, mana spent on dying enemies, missed support opportunities and deaths caused by staying in melee. Fix one of those patterns before changing several talents at once.
QUICK ANSWERS
Retribution Paladin questions
Does Forever Retribution use a Retail Holy Power rotation? +
No. Build around the actual Forever mana, seal and attack toolkit rather than importing Retail resource assumptions.
Should I start by mastering seal twisting? +
First establish a reliable main cycle and encounter awareness. Then add the documented Twist of Light interaction without losing support or movement decisions.
