THE COBALT TAKE · EDITORIAL ASSESSMENT
Our starting approach is controlled packs and planned mana use. The new target-control tools address an old weakness, but they do not turn every oversized pull into a good idea.
PRE-LAUNCH GUIDE Source reviewed 30 October 2026. Forever launches 4 November. Talent data is versioned; balance and gearing advice remain provisional.

Supports the tanking kit and its Judgement-based target-control interaction.
Adds a major defensive response that must be planned around its restrictions.
Connects Holy Strike to Protection threat and defense.

A more complete tank still needs a plan
Protection Paladin brings a recognizable mix of Holy damage, a shield and group support to the tank role. Forever adds answers to weaknesses that shaped the original Classic experience, including the Seal of Fury and Judgement interaction. That is a reason to reassess the specialization rather than recycle an old verdict about what it can never do.
Before any pull, know the dangerous enemy, where the pack should stop and whether your healer can see you. Start with a manageable group while everyone learns. This guide is a pre-launch planning document; the presence of a full talent tree is not proof that every endgame encounter or final gear threshold has already been tested.
Connect your threat, defense and mana choices
Read Improved Seal of Fury and Iron Creed alongside the baseline tanking kit. Their value is easier to judge when you understand which attack or damage event makes them contribute. Swift Judgement deserves attention when you need a target-recovery answer available at a specific moment rather than on a convenient damage schedule.
Templar's Bulwark provides a large defensive option deeper in the tree, but its restrictions matter. Plan it together with your other protection effects instead of assuming all emergency buttons can be pressed in any order. Our preference for a first tanking setup is a coherent shield and mana plan with enough attention left to control the pack.
Establish control before expanding the fight
Begin with your intended aura, Seal of Fury and Righteous Fury settings in place. Identify which target needs immediate attention and which enemies can be gathered safely. Use Holy Strike and the Judgement of Fury interaction deliberately; keep an answer available for a dangerous target that leaves you rather than spending every target-control opportunity on an enemy you already hold.
Place Consecration where the enemies will remain, not merely where you happened to stand on the first global. Repeatedly moving a pack out of your own ground effect wastes both positioning and mana. If the route needs movement, tell your group where the final tank position will be before damage players settle into theirs.
Watch ranged enemies and allies at the edges of the pull. A strong area-threat tool does not automatically reach a caster that never joined the pack. Use terrain or a coordinated stop where appropriate, and do not pull additional enemies while still correcting the first group.
A tank without mana has fewer answers
Treat mana as a resource for control and survival, not only damage. Repeatedly paying for a ground effect on a dying pack can leave the next pull without the tools it needs. The tanking talents add resource interactions, but they do not make careless spending invisible.
Communicate when you need a drink or a smaller next pull. Plan the route so a brief recovery does not surprise the group halfway through a chain of enemies. If you frequently run out, review placement, unnecessary casts and the damage pattern before replacing half your gear. Our view is that stable pacing beats a fast opening followed by a long emergency stop.
Match defensive tools to a known danger
Use Holy Shield and the shield-oriented kit for the attacks they can address, and plan larger defensive cooldowns for the incoming event you expect rather than only after your health bar collapses. Tell the healer when you have covered a dangerous period and when you will need help next. Familiar Paladin protections can have restrictions that change which answer is available afterward.
Do not assume an immunity is a simple substitute for tanking. Read the current encounter and ability behavior before using a button that could change how enemies interact with you. Keep the group’s position in mind: surviving personally is only part of the job if an enemy immediately moves toward an unprepared ally.
Use gear to solve the actual failure
Review your shield, health, armor, defensive bonuses and attack reliability as different parts of the loadout. Consider mana support when it affects your ability to control a long fight. We do not publish an unverified universal defensive threshold or final level-60 Best-in-Slot list. After a difficult pull, decide whether the issue was survival, a missed target, resource exhaustion or group coordination before shopping for a single-stat solution.
QUICK ANSWERS
Protection Paladin questions
Can Protection Paladin recover a loose target in Forever? +
The published Seal of Fury and Judgement interaction supplies a taunt tool. Read and practice that interaction rather than assuming the old Classic limitation still applies.
Should I chain-pull because I have Consecration? +
Only when control, mana, healer readiness and the route support it. An area effect does not automatically make a larger pull safe.
