THE COBALT TAKE · EDITORIAL ASSESSMENT

Our provisional Ret recommendation is pressure with support awareness. Choose a reachable target and keep a helpful global available; an isolated all-in is not automatically a good burst window.

PRE-LAUNCH GUIDE Source reviewed 30 October 2026. Forever launches 4 November. Talent data is versioned; balance and gearing advice remain provisional.

Pressure and support belong in the same plan

Retribution gives you a way to threaten an enemy while still carrying Paladin support tools. The difficult decision is often which of those jobs matters on the next global. A teammate freed to move or act can contribute more than another attack into a target that is already well protected.

This guide is written for battleground and open-world fights in the documented Forever setting. It does not claim an arena meta, launch-tested burst ranking or a universal best composition. Our opinions are provisional tactical judgments from the published toolkit, not the result of fabricated match records.

Keep the build understandable under pressure

Holy Strike, Judgement and your selected seal provide the attack cycle to understand first. Examine support and movement-related options alongside damage talents so you know how you expect to reach a player who does not want to remain in melee. A setup that performs well against an unmoving enemy can still have a poor plan for an escaping opponent.

Twist of Light introduces a deliberate seal-replacement interaction, but PvP adds interruptions and abrupt target changes to that sequence. Our recommendation is to add that complexity after you can identify which seal should be active when the exchange changes. Do not promise that one imported macro will correctly solve every seal, target and support decision for you.

Make a window your team can use

Choose an opponent your allies can also reach. Before committing Hammer of Justice or another important tool, check whether friendly support can follow and whether the enemy is about to move behind cover. A coordinated attack into a genuine opening is more useful than separate bursts spread across unrelated targets. Keep Holy Strike and your seal plan ready for the space your team creates.

Keep your main attack cycle available, but preserve enough mana for the next necessary action. When a target uses a major defensive answer, decide whether to continue, switch to a newly exposed enemy or help your own team recover. Remaining committed merely because you already spent a cooldown can turn one poor trade into a lost engagement.

Avoid using wide damage thoughtlessly around controlled enemies. A broken control effect can release the opponent who prevents your next attack window. Likewise, do not leave an important route or objective undefended simply because a low-health enemy is running away in a direction that separates you from your group.

Spend a useful global on an ally

Keep an eye on the teammate who is taking focused pressure. An appropriate blessing, a Cleanse or a timely control effect can let that ally resume damage or healing. Tell them what help you are providing so they can preserve another response for the next exchange.

Do not assume an emergency heal is free of opportunity cost. It takes time, mana and often a safe casting position. Use it when it changes the outcome, not because you feel obliged to turn every small injury into a full healing assignment. Our view is that Ret support should be purposeful enough to explain: who regained control, who survived or which attack became possible afterward.

Use defense to create another useful state

Have a route back toward friendly help before your health becomes critical. A large defensive cooldown is most valuable when it buys recovery, positioning or a new coordinated attack. Extending an isolated chase rarely makes the same button as useful.

Read the restrictions and interactions on your current protective abilities, including any shared limitations. Check the battleground objective rules before relying on an immunity while carrying or interacting with an objective. Practice your ordinary defensive sequence and binds before adding a clever equipment or ability macro from another version of the game.

Build for contact, survival and repeatable pressure

A useful weapon matters, but a full offensive loadout that cannot remain active may not fit your assignment. Compare reliability, health and the stats that support both your damage and resource budget. We are not publishing final caps, a compulsory race or a completed PvP Best-in-Slot list from beta coverage. Use the current Honor vendor requirements and review why an upgrade helps the fights you actually play.

QUICK ANSWERS

Retribution Paladin questions

Should every control effect be used for my own damage? +

No. Saving a teammate or preserving a shared target window can be worth more than using the same stop to add personal pressure.

Is the most complicated seal setup automatically best? +

No. Its practical value depends on execution, contact and the changing fight. Learn the documented interaction before adding it to an already busy support role.
