THE COBALT TAKE · EDITORIAL ASSESSMENT

Our starting recommendation for an independent Hunter is Beast Mastery with disciplined pet control. A healthy, correctly positioned companion is a more useful first goal than an unsupported maximum-level pet ranking.

PRE-LAUNCH GUIDE Source reviewed 30 October 2026. Forever launches 4 November. Talent data is versioned; balance and gearing advice remain provisional.

Summon Hawk

Adds a temporary attacker and shares a cooldown decision with Arcane Shot.

Focused Fire

Rewards keeping your active pet involved in the fight.

You are managing two positions

Beast Mastery asks you to watch both your own firing position and the place your companion is fighting. A clean ranged position does not help if the pet is standing in a dangerous effect or has chased a target into another pack. Start by learning attack, follow and passive controls, and keep them on binds you can use without searching a menu.

Forever strengthens the pet-centered identity and adds Summon Hawk, but this remains a pre-launch planning guide. Several specialist examples describe the level-30 beta rather than a final level-60 raid environment. We use those examples to understand decisions, not to invent a completed Best-in-Slot list or a proven endgame ranking.

Build a pet package you can keep active

Read pet damage, durability and resource choices together. Focused Fire only fits the intended plan when the active pet can continue contributing. A damage improvement that repeatedly disappears because the companion dies or becomes stranded is less useful in practice than its tooltip suggests.

Summon Hawk introduces a shared-cooldown decision with Arcane Shot. Learn that relationship rather than pressing both as though they were independent buttons. Examine pet-support talents such as Improved Mend Pet in the context of your content: a solo companion holding enemies has a different job from a pet accompanying a party tank. Our preference is to solve the companion’s reliability before chasing a marginal offensive improvement.

A simple ranged and pet decision loop

Identify the target, your safe range and the pet’s route before starting. In solo play, allow the companion to establish useful control rather than immediately forcing the enemy onto you. In a group, remember that the party tank controls the pull: check Growl’s automatic-use setting and use companion commands that support that plan rather than competing for the tank’s target.

Keep your basic ranged attacks working while deciding which mana abilities are worthwhile. Use the Summon Hawk interaction deliberately once trained and talented, and account for its shared cooldown before using Arcane Shot. Apply a damage-over-time effect only when the target is likely to live long enough for the investment to pay off.

Reposition before an enemy reaches the range where your intended shot becomes unavailable. Do not import Retail movement behavior into a familiar ability name: the documented Forever Disengage change concerns threat reduction, not a promise of a backward leap. Keep a plan for control, movement and pet recovery instead of relying on an ability you remember from another ruleset.

Choose a companion for a job

Forever gives pet families distinct abilities, so begin with the problem you need the companion to solve. A solo tanking role, a useful group effect and a particular control need are different reasons to choose a pet. We would not name one universal winner from limited pre-launch evidence.

Pay attention to health, training and the companion’s actual uptime. Recall it before a risky shortcut or when its target becomes unsafe to reach. If it dies, review why before merely replacing it and repeating the same pull. A small loss of theoretical damage can be worthwhile when it keeps the pet present for the entire encounter.

Keep the pair contributing over the whole fight

Compare your ranged weapon and the stats that support your own attacks alongside the pet’s contribution. The official update gives pets scaling from Hunter gear, making it even less useful to treat the companion as a completely separate fixed-damage object. Evaluate the whole loadout rather than attributing every improvement to a single secondary stat.

Spend mana according to the target’s remaining life and the encounter’s length. Basic attacks and a correctly managed companion remain useful when optional casts are not affordable. We are not publishing universal hit targets, exact stat weights or a completed launch gear list; improve obvious weapon and survival weaknesses first, then compare repeatable attempts.

Review the missing damage you can explain

Look for time spent too close to shoot, pet deaths, companions chasing an unnecessary target and mana spent on enemies that died almost immediately. Also review damage that broke an assigned control effect. Fixing those patterns can produce a clearer improvement than changing several talents at once and hoping the next pull happens to look better.

QUICK ANSWERS

Beast Mastery Hunter questions

Is Arcane Shot independent of Summon Hawk? +

No. The official Forever update describes a shared cooldown. Account for that relationship instead of treating both as unrelated filler.

Which pet is always best? +

We do not claim a universal pre-launch winner. Choose a family ability and a survivability profile that fit the job, then evaluate real uptime.
