THE COBALT TAKE · EDITORIAL ASSESSMENT
Our starting recommendation is to protect your firing windows before optimizing around them. Choose the petless direction deliberately; keeping a companion can still solve problems that a damage tooltip does not describe.
PRE-LAUNCH GUIDE Source reviewed 30 October 2026. Forever launches 4 November. Talent data is versioned; balance and gearing advice remain provisional.

A baseline Forever shot that remains central to deliberate ranged damage.
Introduces a petless option with real utility and damage tradeoffs.
Adds a deeper-tree long-cast decision that rewards a prepared firing position.

Make a good firing position part of your rotation
Marksmanship puts more emphasis on the Hunter’s own ranged attacks. That makes a safe place to stand a damage decision rather than an afterthought. Before the pull, identify where you can remain at useful range and where the tank intends to move. Repeatedly interrupting your own attacks to correct a bad starting position is an avoidable loss.
This is pre-launch planning for Forever, not a claim that the full level-60 raid cycle has been solved. Some specialist examples cover the lower-level beta. We use them to establish the kind of decisions the specialization asks you to make, while reserving final stat weights, build codes and Best-in-Slot claims for stronger evidence.
Choose the petless direction for the right content
Lone Wolf offers a petless direction, but that is a choice with practical consequences. A companion can contribute a family ability, absorb attention during solo play or provide other useful support. Compare those benefits with the intended petless damage plan instead of dismissing them as irrelevant because a talent exists.
Read the mana and ranged-attack support around the main Marksmanship path, including Careful Aim and Rapid Recuperation where relevant. Sniper Shot adds a deeper-tree firing decision, but a long cast needs a safe window. Our preference is a setup whose main benefit can be used consistently on your actual encounters rather than one chosen only for an uninterrupted target test.
Plan the shot, then preserve the window
Start on the correct target, set your intended aspect and establish a useful range. If you keep a pet, choose its role and route before contact rather than allowing it to improvise the pull. Maintain your basic ranged attacks while selecting the mana abilities that fit the target’s remaining life and the encounter’s length.
Aimed Shot is baseline in Forever, and its cooldown relationship with Multi-Shot changes the decision when extra targets are present. Choose the appropriate use for the pull rather than assuming both can simply be added independently. Account for any planned deeper-tree shot before spending its safe casting opportunity on a low-value filler action.
If a mechanic is about to force movement, move with intent instead of beginning a cast you already expect to abandon. A brief planned reposition can create several later attacks. Do not use wide damage around targets your group intends to control, and do not stand in dangerous terrain merely because it appears to preserve one more shot.
Keep damage sustainable
A fast sequence of expensive shots is not automatically the best plan for a long encounter. Watch the work still ahead and spend according to the target’s health and your chance to recover. A damage-over-time effect has a different value on a boss from the value it has on a nearly dead dungeon enemy.
Learn how your chosen talents support regeneration or reduce costs, then examine whether you are actually meeting their conditions. Our view is that reliable basic attacks and sensible spending are a better foundation than treating an empty mana bar as proof that you played aggressively. Tell the group when the next pull needs a recovery pause.
A ranged weapon is a real upgrade decision
Compare the ranged weapon first, then the useful stats and survival of the full loadout. Examine hybrid-looking stats in the context of the actual Forever talents rather than importing a complete priority from Classic or Retail. If you keep a companion, include its contribution when evaluating the result.
We are not publishing one universal hit target, a compulsory race or a final launch item set. Keep enough health to perform the mechanics and compare gear changes under similar movement conditions. A small theoretical gain that disappears whenever you must move may be less useful than the stable alternative you already understand.
Look at why a shot did not happen
Review abandoned casts, time spent too close to attack from range, missed opportunities caused by poor starting positions and mana spent on targets that died immediately. If using Lone Wolf, also review situations where the absent pet would have solved a practical problem. Change one variable at a time so the next result teaches you something useful.
QUICK ANSWERS
Marksmanship Hunter questions
Does Marksmanship require playing without a pet? +
No. Lone Wolf introduces a petless option; choosing it means comparing its benefit with the companion’s practical damage, control and solo value.
Can I use Aimed Shot and Multi-Shot as independent cooldowns? +
The official Forever update gives them a shared cooldown. Choose the appropriate shot for the situation.
