THE COBALT TAKE · EDITORIAL ASSESSMENT
Our starting recommendation is to learn one clean melee cycle while keeping your ranged toolkit available. Treat a move into melee as a decision about safety and uptime, not an obligation to stand in every cleave.
PRE-LAUNCH GUIDE Source reviewed 30 October 2026. Forever launches 4 November. Talent data is versioned; balance and gearing advice remain provisional.
Connects attacks on a marked target to Mongoose Bite opportunities.

Talent data & scope
Functional tree data: ArenaMaster 1.60.1.70532 snapshot, retrieved 2026-10-30. Grid positions and ranks were cross-checked against Eternadex. Later snapshots can differ; this planner retains its stated version. Off-grid legacy entries are excluded from the visible tree. Our planner code and guide text are original. A different Hunter damage direction
Survival gives the Hunter a more deliberate melee-and-trap direction in Forever. That changes your positioning problem: you are no longer only trying to preserve a safe firing distance. You must decide when melee access is useful, when the encounter forces you out and how to keep contributing during the transition.
The ranged toolkit does not disappear because you invest in melee talents. Our recommendation is to learn both positions and move between them for a visible reason. This is pre-launch planning from published mechanics and lower-level beta examples, not a claim that the final level-60 damage balance or every encounter’s best position has been tested.
Connect the marked-target and melee interactions
Read Expose Prey with Hunter’s Mark and Mongoose Bite so you understand the condition that creates your opportunity. Examine Predator’s Edge and other melee support in the context of the weapons you actually have. A complete tree is useful for seeing the intended direction, but not every deep interaction is available while leveling.
Strider Kick adds an active melee decision, while Lacerating Strikes gives a deeper-tree reason to care about sustained damage from Mongoose Bite. Resourcefulness and trap-related choices address the cost and availability of the broader toolkit. Our preference is a coherent plan you can execute during mechanics, rather than treating every possible damage interaction as mandatory on the same pull.
Enter melee with a target and an exit
Before contact, mark the intended target, check your pet’s role and identify the tank’s final position. If you are approaching from range, use the available ranged window without letting the pet take an unintended route through another pack. Enter melee only when the enemy’s facing and encounter mechanics make it sensible.
Keep the marked-target interaction working and watch for Mongoose Bite opportunities. Use the appropriate melee attacks, including Raptor Strike and Strider Kick when available, without spending resources so carelessly that a more important action is delayed. A bleed-oriented investment is more valuable on an enemy that will remain alive than on one already about to die.
When the encounter forces you out, switch your attention to useful ranged actions and a safe route back. Do not stand in a dangerous frontal effect merely to preserve a melee label. Likewise, do not force yourself into the awkward gap between melee and the range needed for a planned shot; move with intent to the position that makes the next action possible.
Use the rest of the Hunter toolkit deliberately
In-combat traps create useful options, but placing one still asks where the enemy will be. Dropping it where nothing will trigger it wastes both the action and the resource. Coordinate with the tank when the group plans to move, and avoid damaging a target that is supposed to remain controlled.
The companion remains another position to manage. Choose settings that fit the group’s pull, recall it for unsafe routes and watch its health while you are busy in melee. A pet that survives and stays on the correct target is a more useful contribution than one whose theoretical damage is high but whose actual encounter uptime is poor.
Gear for the cycle you can sustain
Compare your melee weapon package and the talents that support it, while keeping the ranged weapon usable for transitions. A melee-oriented talent does not make every item from a ranged setup worthless, nor does a familiar Classic stat order automatically describe Forever. Evaluate what the whole loadout adds to your intended cycle.
Watch the mana cost of traps, melee actions and optional ranged casts together. Resource talents help only when their conditions fit the fight. We are not publishing a final stat-weight table, universal hit cap or complete launch Best-in-Slot list. First fix obvious weapon weaknesses, survival problems and unnecessary spending on targets that die too soon.
Review transitions as well as attacks
After a run, look for expired Mongoose Bite opportunities, lost time in an unusable distance band, traps placed away from the pack and avoidable damage taken while forcing melee uptime. Compare those decisions before changing the build. Our view is that a Survival Hunter who transitions cleanly is easier for the group to support and easier to improve.
QUICK ANSWERS
Survival Hunter questions
Is Survival a purely ranged specialization in Forever? +
The published redesign explicitly supports melee and traps, while retaining the Hunter ranged toolkit. Do not import a later expansion’s Survival rotation.
Should I stay in melee regardless of mechanics? +
No. Move to the position that allows safe, useful attacks. Your ranged options are part of the reason to learn clean transitions.
