THE COBALT TAKE · EDITORIAL ASSESSMENT

Our take: Combat is an approachable starting point for learning melee uptime. The valuable skill is making its straightforward tools fit a moving encounter.

PRE-LAUNCH GUIDE Source reviewed 30 October 2026. Forever launches 4 November. Talent data is versioned; balance and gearing advice remain provisional.

Sinister Strike

A straightforward builder whose usefulness depends on weapon choice and available contact.

Blade Flurry

A cooldown to align with a controlled opportunity, not a reason to break crowd control.

Adrenaline Rush

Extra resources are useful only when the fight lets you spend them well.

Talent data & scope

Functional tree data: ArenaMaster 1.60.1.70532 snapshot, retrieved 2026-10-30. Grid positions and ranks were cross-checked against Eternadex. Later snapshots can differ; this planner retains its stated version. Off-grid legacy entries are excluded from the visible tree. Our planner code and guide text are original. Make safe attack time the first target

Combat rewards staying usefully engaged, but useful engagement means attacking the correct enemy from a safe position. Start by learning where the tank wants a pack and which mechanics require you to move. Do not sacrifice several seconds of later activity for one extra attack just before avoidable damage lands.

Our recommendation is to build a repeatable pull routine before chasing a complicated cooldown combination. The guide is based on the available Forever sources and our editorial analysis; it does not claim a final launch raid ranking.

Understand the weapon and cooldown choices

Hack and Slash changes how the reviewed Combat toolkit evaluates weapon options, while Blade Flurry and Adrenaline Rush are major planning decisions. Inspect the current talent conditions rather than assuming the separate Classic weapon specializations still govern every choice in the same way.

Choose flexible points for the content you run. Reliable connections, useful energy spending and an interrupt assignment can matter more than an attractive theoretical path. Check whether an external recommendation discusses leveling, sustained boss damage or a particular weapon setup before adopting it.

A readable builder-and-finisher loop

Let the pull settle, begin attacks and use Sinister Strike as your ordinary builder when that is the kit you selected. Use available procs appropriately, then decide what your next finisher needs to achieve. Slice and Dice maintenance and direct finishing damage serve different target lifetimes.

On a short-lived enemy, do not build a maintenance plan for a future that will never arrive. On a durable target, avoid repeatedly letting useful support fall away simply because direct damage looks more exciting. Keep enough attention on the environment to interrupt and move when your assignment demands it.

Cooldowns need a window, not just a keybind

Before using an offensive cooldown, check whether the target is about to move, become unavailable or die. Extra energy is of little value if you cannot safely spend it. A cleave opportunity also needs nearby enemies that the tank actually intends the group to attack.

We would avoid combining every cooldown automatically while learning encounters. Keeping the decisions separate makes it easier to see which one produced useful work and which one was wasted. Combine them deliberately later when you understand the window and the consequences.

Compare the whole weapon setup

Inspect weapon damage, speed and talent compatibility together rather than selecting an item from its color or one isolated stat. A main-hand change can alter the value of your ordinary attacks and builder. The off-hand belongs in the same equipment conversation, even when the two slots favor different properties.

We are not publishing an unverified level-60 best-in-slot shopping list. Compare realistic alternatives, record the weapon condition of the build and keep enough survivability to complete the encounter. Small mathematical gains disappear quickly when avoidable deaths dominate the run.

Be the melee player the group can trust

Know the interrupt order, watch enemies beyond your current target and stop cleaving when a control plan requires it. Communicate before switching a difficult pack's focus. A controlled pull gives you more time to attack than an uncontrolled one rescued by desperate movement.

After a run, review cooldowns spent into dead windows, energy wasted while capped and maintenance applied too late to matter. Correcting one recurring timing issue is a more convincing upgrade than replacing an entire talent layout after a single disappointing damage comparison.

QUICK ANSWERS

Combat Rogue questions

Is Combat the same as Retail Outlaw? +

No. This article uses the Forever Combat tree. It does not assume Roll the Bones or another Retail-specific system.

Should Blade Flurry be used whenever it is ready? +

Check target lifetime, safe contact and the group control plan first. A cooldown is useful when its opportunity is useful.
