THE COBALT TAKE · EDITORIAL ASSESSMENT
Our take: Assassination deserves a target-lifetime test before a damage verdict. A poison investment needs a fight long enough to repay its setup.
PRE-LAUNCH GUIDE Source reviewed 30 October 2026. Forever launches 4 November. Talent data is versioned; balance and gearing advice remain provisional.
Inspect its weapon requirements before choosing the build and equipping a new drop.
A poison-focused finisher whose investment needs enough time to matter.
Connect poison preparation to actual uptime rather than treating it as a forgotten consumable.

A poison plan, not a copied dagger rotation
The reviewed Forever coverage gives Assassination a clearer poison identity through Mutilate and Venom. That suggests a useful question before each pull: will the target remain available long enough for your chosen setup to do real work? A long boss attempt and a nearly defeated dungeon enemy should not receive the same investment.
Our preparation advice is to learn the resource decisions first. This is an original prelaunch assessment, not a claim that Assassination has already won a settled level-60 damage race.
Talents: connect the points to a target type
Read the current Mutilate weapon condition and the poison-related talents together. Build requirements should influence what you equip, not be discovered after the pull. Treat deeper poison investment as a deliberate choice for the encounters you expect rather than a compulsory purchase because a capstone looks impressive.
Separate leveling and sustained group combat when comparing external builds. A talent that pays off over a long encounter may be awkward while targets die quickly. The calculator helps check legality; it does not prove the allocation is optimal for your gear or assignment.
Opening and finishing priorities
Check weapon effects and poison readiness before combat. Let the tank establish control, move into a safe attacking position and use the builder your actual equipment and talent selection support. Then choose a finisher for the next part of the fight rather than automatically spending everything on the first available button.
Compare maintaining useful attack uptime, establishing poison support and finishing a dying target. A maintenance effect that outlives its target is wasted work. Keep an energy margin when a near-term interrupt or a required movement will otherwise leave you unable to answer.
Weapons and stats: solve compatibility first
A higher-quality item is not automatically a better item for the routine you are trying to play. Check the relevant weapon types, weapon damage and the requirements of the abilities you selected. Only then compare the rest of the equipment. We are not presenting a final numerical weight table or an unexplored launch loot list.
For your own comparison, use similar targets and note lost attack time. A small theoretical gain will not rescue a setup that repeatedly prevents the intended builder from working or makes ordinary group mechanics difficult to survive.
Control is part of the damage assignment
Know which dangerous cast you should interrupt and which enemy must remain controlled. Keep those controls reachable without losing track of your main target. Do not let automatic attacks, poison applications or an impulsive target switch undermine a group control plan that was agreed before the pull.
When an enemy is about to leave the tank, decide whether helping control it is more useful than one more attack on the original target. Reliable group play creates longer safe damage windows for everyone, including you.
Review the poison investment
After a run, ask three questions: were the correct weapon effects present, did your setup have time to pay off and did your finishing choices match the target's remaining life? Those answers are more useful than blaming the entire specialization for one short pack.
Common mistakes include using a remembered Envenom routine from another version, forgetting equipment requirements after a weapon swap and spending the last energy just before an assigned interrupt. Keep the current Forever tooltip as the reference whenever a familiar name tempts you to assume familiar behavior.
QUICK ANSWERS
Assassination Rogue questions
Is Venom the same recommendation as Envenom in another expansion? +
No. Read the actual Forever talent and spell. This guide does not substitute a later-expansion finishing routine for the documented Forever kit.
Should I follow the same setup on every trash enemy? +
No. Consider the remaining lifetime and whether your maintenance investment will accomplish useful work before the enemy dies.
