THE COBALT TAKE · EDITORIAL ASSESSMENT

Our take: make uninterrupted casting and useful totems the foundation. Do not pay for a theoretical burst plan with the mana needed to finish the encounter.

Build a casting plan around the encounter

Elemental asks you to combine ranged damage with a substantial support toolkit. Begin by finding a position that gives you room to cast and keeps the group within practical reach. Identify the next movement event before committing to a sequence of hard casts.

Our recommendation is to learn a repeatable sustained routine before comparing burst screenshots. A fight that ends with empty resources and abandoned support responsibilities needs a different review from a fight in which you could cast freely. This is prelaunch editorial analysis, not a level-60 simulation result.

Compare damage, efficiency and support honestly

The reviewed Forever material connects Lightning Overload with the lightning spells and gives Lava Burst its own interaction with Flame Shock. Read those effects in the current tree. Do not assume a familiar spell must follow the guaranteed-critical-strike rule you remember from another expansion.

When comparing a deeper damage path with supporting mana talents, estimate the kind of encounter you will run. A choice that helps only during a brief burst has a different purpose from one that keeps you active through a longer pull. Avoid presenting either as universally correct without the encounter context.

Opening and ordinary spell decisions

Allow the tank to establish the pull and choose a target that can repay your setup. Apply an effect such as Flame Shock when it supports your current talent interaction and the target has enough useful life remaining. Then follow the available spell relationships rather than copying a fixed retail-style priority string.

Use Lightning Bolt for a single-target casting plan and evaluate Chain Lightning against the enemies the tank actually intends you to hit. More targets are not automatically better when a nearby enemy is controlled or the group is stabilizing a difficult pull.

Do not spend the final reserve accidentally

Watch the resource trend across an encounter, not only the current blue bar. Repeated unnecessary setup, excess totem replacement or damage into a target about to disappear can be expensive without producing useful work. Decide which support and emergency actions must remain affordable.

For gear, compare caster throughput, reliable connections, a usable mana pool and enough durability to survive the mechanics. We are not assigning final numerical weights or a complete launch best-in-slot list. First identify whether your actual constraint is casting time, resources, target access or survival.

Totems belong in the pull plan

Choose totems for the group and the encounter instead of dropping a full set automatically before every harmless enemy. Know which effects compete for the same elemental slot. Place them where their intended recipients or targets will actually remain, and use the available relocation or cleanup tools after movement.

Prepare an interrupt assignment and use support deliberately. Preventing a dangerous cast can be more useful than one additional damage spell, but the rest of the group needs to know whether you are covering that responsibility.

Review missed opportunities before changing the build

After a run, note where casts were lost, which targets died before setup paid off and whether totems followed the fight. Distinguish a build problem from a positioning problem. A small talent change will not fix a pattern of repeatedly choosing exposed casting locations.

Common errors include importing a later-expansion Lava Burst assumption, treating every multi-target opportunity as permission to cleave and following a low-level variant as though it were a proven launch raid configuration. Check the variant label and current tooltip before making the next adjustment.

QUICK ANSWERS

Elemental Shaman questions

Does Flame Shock guarantee a Lava Burst critical strike here? +

Do not assume another expansion’s rule. Read the current Forever spell and talent description; the reviewed Forever overview describes a different interaction.

Should I drop every available totem on every pull? +

Choose effects that will do useful work for that pull. Unnecessary deployment can spend mana and attention without solving a real group problem.
