THE COBALT TAKE · EDITORIAL ASSESSMENT
Our take: Frost is a sensible choice for players who want to turn a dangerous pull into an organized one. The goal is controlled damage uptime, not assuming every enemy can be frozen like an ordinary quest mob.

Control is part of the damage plan
The reviewed Forever sources connect Ice Lance with frozen targets and Fingers of Frost. They also distinguish enemies that can be rooted from targets that cannot. That distinction should change your decisions before you begin casting.
Our recommendation is to organize Frost around safe time. A controlled approach gives you room to finish damage; a sensible fallback keeps a messy pull from becoming a death. Do not confuse that flexibility with a promise of the highest boss damage. A specialization can be valuable because the group completes the fight more reliably.
Decide between a casting plan and a gathering plan
Choose whether the next session is primarily single-target questing, organized dungeon damage, or deliberate area pulls. Review the relevant path through the Frost tree and the points available at your actual level. The strongest-looking total on a complete tree may not describe a functioning low-level character.
Keep the reasons for control choices explicit. Some help maintain distance, some support a damage interaction, and some are emergency tools. A node chosen for repeated pack control should not automatically be called mandatory for a boss. Save variations so you can compare one job at a time.
Begin from the position you want to keep
For a controlled single target, start far enough away to make the approach predictable. Confirm the tank has the enemy in a dungeon and begin your normal casting sequence. Watch the target and the proc display together, then choose whether the next action should deliver damage or preserve the casting space.
For a larger pull, inspect the route before gathering enemies. Look for a safe edge, nearby patrols and a way back to the group. Adding one more target is a new risk decision. It should not happen automatically because the last successful pull felt easy.
Respond to what is actually frozen
Separate a normal filler cast from an Ice Lance opportunity, and recognize when movement makes an instant action useful. Do not assume every visual root remains in place once the group starts hitting the target. Track the state you can currently observe.
Begin with Frostbolt when a safe single-target cast is appropriate; assess Ice Lance against the present frozen or Fingers of Frost opportunity. For a gathered pack, compare a safe Blizzard channel with the need to move. Frost Nova and Cone of Cold belong in a deliberate control plan rather than an automatic opening on every dungeon pull.
Against an enemy that cannot be rooted, remove the root-dependent part of your plan instead of repeatedly trying to manufacture it. In area situations, secure the pack and the tank’s position before choosing close-range pressure. A root can change which nearby character is exposed, so pay attention to your allies as well as your own distance.
Use the emergency button before the emergency spreads
Coordinate the Polymorph target and your interrupt assignment before the pull. Hold enough awareness to notice an enemy leaving the tank or a caster preparing a dangerous spell. Frost’s toolkit should make your group easier to play, rather than forcing everyone to react to unexplained control.
If you need to relocate, move toward the location from which you can help next. Do not scatter a manageable pack across a room simply to keep yourself comfortable. When a pull goes wrong, a clear call and a deliberate control action are more valuable than several independent attempts to save it.
Gear for repeatable pulls
Compare caster damage stats with the resources and health you need for your actual activity. A character doing controlled dungeon damage has different exposure from one intentionally gathering enemies alone. Use the deaths, recovery time and completed casts from comparable pulls to understand the difference.
Keep low-level recommendations separate from projected level-60 gear. We are not assigning exact stat weights, a universal hit cap or a mandatory race in this pre-launch guide. Before buying an upgrade, confirm its current item version and whether it solves the weakness that is limiting your sessions.
Review control failures separately from damage failures
After a difficult pull, ask whether the problem began with gathering, positioning, threat, an unavailable escape, or a missed damage opportunity. Changing a talent for the last category will not fix the first four. Practice the smallest pull that reproduces the problem safely.
Common mistakes include assuming bosses follow quest-mob control rules, using area damage before the group has agreed on a target, and retreating into the next pack. Improve the route and the decision order before increasing the number of enemies. The payoff is less time recovering and more time completing useful casts.
QUICK ANSWERS
Frost Mage questions
Can a Frost build treat every boss as frozen? +
No. Distinguish actual roots from the proc interactions available to your character, and check the current Forever tooltips.
Should I always choose an AoE farming build? +
Only if that is the activity you intend to do. Single-target questing and group encounters can justify different control and damage choices.
Does this include a confirmed raid DPS ranking? +
No. It explains the current toolkit and our practical decisions without claiming launch boss rankings from a low-level beta.
