Start with the edition you own
The project's getting-started documentation supports classic Diablo II with Lord of Destruction at patch 1.14, or Diablo II: Resurrected. The setup reads the player's installation locally. We do not supply installation archives or ask you to upload them here.
Before troubleshooting, write down the edition and the folder you intend to select. A game shortcut is a pointer to a program, not the installation directory. Use the location containing the actual installed game data.
For a classic Lord of Destruction installation
The documented core files are d2data.mpq, d2char.mpq, d2sfx.mpq, d2exp.mpq and patch_d2.mpq. Compare these names against your own folder. Do not download a missing archive from an unrelated guide page.
Use the checklist below as a preparation record. It does not inspect files, authenticate a license or certify that a particular installation is complete.
For Diablo II: Resurrected
The same documentation lists Battle.net and Steam installations. Start with the installed game's directory; do not try to rename unrelated files into classic archive names. If you have several library locations, confirm which one contains the installation you currently use.
Make one change at a time. Selecting a different directory and changing browser settings together makes it difficult to know which change helped.
Run setup on the developer's website
Open the original setup page, select the folder and use its extraction action. Follow the error shown there if it reports missing data. The developer documents local processing; a game-data selection is not a request to send those files to Cobalt Games.
Keep the setup tab open until it finishes. After reaching the game, make a small test session and learn the save controls before investing in a longer run. Our save-backup guide explains a cautious transfer workflow.
