THE COBALT TAKE · EDITORIAL ASSESSMENT
Our take: Shadow works best when you judge how long an enemy will remain useful to attack. Spending on every possible damage effect is less important than choosing the effects that will finish their job.

Damage with a deliberate resource rhythm
The reviewed Forever sources describe a Shadow toolkit built around damage over time, direct Shadow spells and channels. They also discuss the difference between early leveling and a later Shadowform-based character. Those are different resource situations, so do not combine their recommendations without checking your current tools.
Our starting question is simple: how long will this enemy live, and what must remain afterward? A tough target can justify a fuller investment; a nearly defeated add often cannot. A useful damage plan includes the interval after the kill rather than judging only the largest number during it.
Reach the playstyle you intend to use
Look through the real Shadow tree for the interaction you want to develop, then check which prerequisites can be reached at your level. Distinguish damage choices from those that improve the resource or positioning problem you repeatedly encounter.
Keep a leveling allocation separate from a future group-damage plan. Talents that are attractive while you personally finish quest enemies may not solve the same problem in a dungeon. Do not select an incomplete route merely because its final capstone is familiar. Save an explanation of the route so you can re-evaluate it when the launch spellbook and tuning are available.
Apply enough damage, then let it work
Before combat, complete your important preparation and let the tank secure the target. Choose the damage-over-time investment appropriate to the enemy, use a worthwhile direct attack, and commit to Mind Flay only when the channel can serve its purpose. A simpler early-level sequence and a wand finish can be preferable to emptying your resources into a dying enemy.
On multiple targets, add a second damage assignment deliberately rather than pressing every available effect on every nameplate. Keep track of which enemy matters most and which will disappear quickly. Useful damage is damage that contributes to the encounter, not merely damage that can be counted.
Move before your next channel becomes impossible
Choose a position with a clear view of the next mechanic and the tank’s route. Use a necessary movement interval to make a useful instant action when one is appropriate, then stop somewhere that supports the next cast. Repeated small corrections can quietly remove much of your available channel time.
Keep emergency support within reach. If a well-chosen heal, shield or dispel prevents a wipe, the encounter has gained more than the lost damage. Check the current Shadowform and spell interaction before assuming a support action has the same cost it had in another version. The important decision is intentional role switching, not preserving a form at any price.
Compare sustained usefulness, not a short burst sample
Examine caster damage, available Mana and the ability to stay active through the encounter. The best item for a short quest pull may differ from one that helps a group make steady progress. Review your actual recovery time and the number of meaningful actions you complete before needing a pause.
Do not buy a projected level-60 set from a beta-level ranking without checking each item’s current version and the recommendation’s scope. We are not assigning exact caps, stat weights or mandatory racial choices. An honest gearing note should tell you what problem the item solves and what evidence would change the recommendation.
Measure wasted commitments
After several comparable pulls, count the occasions when you applied an effect to a target that died before the investment mattered, interrupted your own channel to move, or reached the next pull unprepared. These observations give you specific changes to test.
Common mistakes are spreading pressure too widely, using an expensive finish where a cheaper action would do, and refusing an emergency support task because it interrupts the damage plan. Practice identifying a priority target and an exit condition for each cast. Improving those decisions makes later tuning changes easier to adapt to without rebuilding your understanding from scratch.
QUICK ANSWERS
Shadow Priest questions
Should Shadow apply every DoT to every enemy? +
No. Consider target lifetime, the encounter objective and the resources needed for the next action.
Should I avoid healing to preserve damage? +
Not when a support action can prevent a wipe. Make the tradeoff deliberately and verify the current Forever form interaction.
Is a level-30 rotation a complete level-60 guide? +
No. The available talents, spellbook and itemization change; this guide separates current toolkit decisions from unconfirmed endgame optimization.
